If Antonio Cromartie, who suffered a concussion in last week's game, can't play when the Jets visit the Carolina Panthers, Lankster could play more than that on Sunday. Cromartie made the trip to Charlotte and is hoping to be cleared to play. If not, Lankster could be squaring off with the Panthers' combative star receiver, Steve Smith. "Might as well put boxing gloves on those kids," New York Jets coach Rex Ryan said of a Lankster/Smith matchup. "We'd pay to watch that one. They're both the same kind of guys. Steve Smith and him are very similar that way -- very competitive guys. Lankster said he wouldn't be intimidated if called on. "Steve Smith? It will be great. I'm ready," Lankster said. "They're finally giving me a chance if 'Cro' can't go. I'm ready. "I already know how Steve Smith is, and I've got attitude about me, too. Good route runner, quick hands, aggressive -- he's legit. Lankster had hoped to have guests at Sunday's game even though the Jets are the visiting team. Lankster, who has dealt with stuttering, invited a North Carolina family to attend the game as his guests after seeing a story on 8-year-old twins on "Good Morning America." The twins' mother, Karen Suffern, posted Ryan's letter to Santa Claus on her Facebook page, and it gained national attention. Ryan asked Santa to stop the children at their school from bullying his sister, Amber. However, the family won't be able to make the trip from their home in Rocky Mount, N.C., about a four-hour drive from Charlotte. @cariecep I still want to thank you for reaching out and trying to get us to the game. You and @EllisLankster21 are amazing people. While Lankster's contributions for the Jets' defense have been limited this season, he's a major player for the New York special-teams units. Lankster has played 347 special-teams snaps in 2013, making his mark in punt and kickoff coverage. "Ellis and (Isaiah) Trufant, they have been unbelievable all year," Jets punter Ryan Quigley said. "They're two of the top guys in the league at their positions. They're both getting double-teamed and pretty much in the toughest scenario possible more often than not, and they're still around the ball making plays. It's awesome. "All I do is kick the ball. They do all the hard stuff. You can't be a good punter without guys like that, so it's almost like every week, 'Dude, thank you,' to show how appreciative I am. After the Jets' game against Miami on Dec. 1, Dolphins special-teams coach Darren Rizzi met Lankster on the field to tell him he'd been a top priority in getting his units ready for the game.
